For decades, Aroostook County residents had to travel several hours to central Maine for their emergency veterinary needs, putting a significant financial strain on pet owners who are already struggling with high veterinary bills.
This historical lack of essential emergency veterinary services amplified the suffering of animals often considered part of the family. For too long, pet owners in Aroostook County have felt powerless when their pets have experienced medical emergencies during off hours and had to watch them suffer during the long voyage south while others had to watch their pets die on the way.
No longer.
On February 12, 2026 Aroostook Animal Emergency Services opened its doors at 64 Main Street in Mars Hill, Maine in the heart of Aroostook County. The facility is now the northernmost after-hours veterinary clinic in the state.
Mark and Anne Tareila have worked tirelessly since late 2024 to plan and make this project a reality. Anne has been a licensed veterinarian for more than 10 years, and for 8 of those years she has practiced at two veterinarian facilities in Aroostook County. Mark serves as the business manager for the clinic as well as serving as the building superintendent, which frees up Anne to focus on delivering quality emergency veterinary care as the sole full-time veterinarian.
Initially, the clinic is open from 4:00PM to midnight on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and will also be open Saturdays from noon to midnight. These hours will be expanded as they are able to add more veterinarians and support staff.
If you are in the Mars Hill area on June 1, Tareila Holdings will be hosting an Open House from 7-9 pm at the clinic.
