Laurie Murphy and her husband Bart launched Crawford Farm Weddings & Events in Warren as an ambitious new chapter in retirement, combining their love of old architecture, Maine barns, and meaningful gatherings. Laurie retired last year after a lifelong career as a special educator, while Bart continues to work as a highly skilled contractor. Together, they bring their experience, energy, and vision to Crawford Farm, transforming the property into a wedding and event venue where they can share its beauty while helping guests create lasting memories.
The idea grew from both their experience and their interests. Laurie and Bart already understood the renovation side of the project, but as they worked to transform the barns and farmhouse into a place for weddings and events, they realized they needed guidance on the planning side of the business.
That led them to Maine SBDC, where Business Advisor Jenn Dobransky helped them think through the realities of the business and approach their next steps with more clarity. Rather than simply offering encouragement, she helped them take a realistic look at their goals, expectations, and challenges as they moved forward.
“Jenn was able to grasp our challenges quickly and help us see our business in a more realistic way,” Laurie said. “She has been supportive, honest, knowledgeable and fun to work with.”
That support gave the Murphys more confidence as they shaped their plans for Crawford Farm Weddings & Events. Laurie says one of the most rewarding parts of owning the business is helping couples and other guests bring their ideas to life and create lifelong memories at the farm. For a business built around celebration, that sense of purpose is central to the work.
While Crawford Farm Weddings & Events represents a new phase of life for Laurie and Bart, they are far from slowing down. They have continued to make significant improvements to the property and have just wrapped up another stage of growth, including adding additional bathroom facilities and overnight quarters for wedding parties.
Looking ahead, Laurie and Bart are excited for the years to come and feel far more clear about what success can look like for their business. With stronger planning and a better understanding of their path forward, they are continuing to build Crawford Farm Weddings & Events into a place where Maine couples and families can celebrate special moments.
