Lynne Stewart Designs – Kennebunk

Lynne Stewart operates Lynne Stewart Designs, a custom sewing workroom based in Kennebunk that blends fine home décor craftsmanship with imaginative soft-sculpture creations. With a BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design and over 2 decades of experience, Lynne balances her days between client commissions—cushions, pillows, and window treatments—and a line of fabric sculptures crafted from upcycled materials.

What began in 2001 as a sewing alterations business gradually evolved as Lynne gravitated toward the creative freedom of home décor and sculpture work. About 5 years ago, she began participating in markets, showcasing whimsical pieces like stump ottomans, cats, and even yetis. Her work reflects a deep love for both form and function, and despite being asked whether she’ll focus on just one area, her answer has always been the same: “I love both avenues.”

Lynne’s biggest challenge has been learning to balance the creative side of her work with the demands of running a business. With projects constantly on her mind and deadlines always approaching, stepping away can be difficult. While the business and administrative aspects didn’t come as naturally, she credits her strong math skills and growing experience for helping her manage logistics and stay organized.

When a friend recommended reaching out to Maine SBDC, Lynne connected with Business Advisor Anne Lancaster. The timing was ideal, as Lynne was seeking to grow her wholesale presence and refine her business image. “Anne is very knowledgeable and has gone above what my expectations were,” Lynne said. With Anne’s guidance, Lynne successfully secured a CDBG grant, which enabled her to invest in professional photography, launch a website, and participate in the New England Made (NEM) show in Boxborough, Massachusetts.

The opportunity helped expand visibility for both arms of her business. She’ll return as a vendor at the Portland NEM show this spring and is already planning to increase wholesale operations in 2026. Lynne was recently accepted into Maine Made, a milestone that affirms her craftsmanship and dedication.

With clear goals and deep creative roots, Lynne continues to grow her business with an eye toward sustainability, artistry, and regional reach.
