After nearly two decades as an esthetician and over a decade practicing Reiki, Amanda Foster had long dreamed of opening her own business where she could combine her passions into a single healing space.
She had a clear vision and a lifetime of skills but bringing it all together required support. At the recommendation of a friend, she reached out to Maine SBDC and began working with Business Advisor Tina Oddleifson.
With Tina’s help, Amanda opened Foster Serenity in Portland where she helps clients look and feel their best in a calm, nurturing environment. She also offers Reiki Certification classes, creating opportunities for others to explore holistic wellness.
Amanda credits Tina with making the launch possible. “I wouldn’t be open today if I hadn’t had the expertise, guidance and encouragement from my advisor, Tina,” she said. “Tina helped me with a business plan, how to budget, how to form an LLC, how to apply for a Retail Sales Certificate. The list goes on.”
Having her own business has allowed Amanda to make all her own decisions, and grow in areas of her own choosing, with a 110% focus on clients.
Looking ahead, she’s considering collaborations with other local businesses and dreams of offering pro bono healing services to those in need. If demand continues to grow, she may bring another practitioner on board.
Opening Foster Serenity has been transformational for Amanda. “Every day I’m full of gratitude for what I have created, and for the help and guidance I received from SBDC,” she shared. With a solid foundation and a clear sense of purpose, Amanda is building not just a business, but a life aligned with her values and talents.
