Boldly Lacquer – Machias

Ellie Hammond launched Boldly Lacquer in Machias after developing a nail allergy during the pandemic and struggling to find polish that met her standards. That experience sparked her passion for creating “10-free” nail lacquers, formulated without many of the harsh chemicals found in conventional products.

As she began researching and experimenting, Ellie discovered the world of indie polish—independently made, small-batch lacquers known for their creativity, unique finishes, and deep connection to personal storytelling. That emphasis quickly became part of Boldly’s identity, as Ellie built a brand rooted in safety, self-expression, and meaning.

From the beginning, Ellie knew she wanted to do things the right way. “I haven’t found a business like mine in my region,” she explained. “It didn’t make sense to build a business based on someone’s experiences in another state.” Confident in her vision but aware of the unique hurdles ahead, she reached out to Maine SBDC for guidance.

Dan McDonald was instrumental throughout the process. Together, they tackled essential first steps, including developing a cash flow statement and financial projections, forming her LLC, and addressing permitting and insurance needs.

Beyond the logistics, Ellie valued Dan’s encouragement and steady support as she adjusted to the challenges of becoming a public-facing entrepreneur. “Dan has been by my side through all of this,” she said. “He showed me support and enthusiasm from our very first meeting, never tried to discourage me from what I set for goals, and was even a support through my first substantial hurdle.”

With a growing customer base and an increasingly recognizable brand, Ellie is on a path toward turning Boldly Lacquer into a full-time venture. “Ellie came to the SBDC with a clear dream and unwavering determination from day one,” Dan shared. “Ellie quickly turned her vision into reality, growing both her customer base and revenue in a remarkably short time. Her success is a testament to her resilience and commitment, and she’s making a meaningful impact by serving our community with passion.”

Looking ahead, Ellie hopes Boldly will allow her to provide for her family and serve others who’ve had similar experiences. Her daughter, who already loves painting her nails “like mama,” remains a key inspiration. Ellie’s long-term goal is to build something meaningful that she can share with others across Maine: a business born from care, creativity, and conviction.
