Carlos Toledo purchased Heirloom Consignment in South Portland in November 2025, beginning a new career as the owner of a longtime Knightville neighborhood business. After spending two decades as a health scientist at the CDC, Carlos retired in April 2025 and began looking for a new challenge rooted in creativity and community.
The opportunity to purchase Heirloom Consignment felt like a natural fit. Carlos has been visiting Maine for more than 20 years with his spouse, a native of the state and whose family has lived in Knightville for over a decade. He was also familiar with the store having already been a customer. His international travel and interest in art, design, and culture have shaped his vision for the business.
Taking ownership meant entering an unfamiliar professional world. Carlos needed to learn how to manage the transition, develop a business plan, understand financial projections, and prepare for the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. Many people had recommended he contact the SBDC, and the Maine location was the first he approached while purchasing the store.
Business Advisor Christina Oddleifson helped Carlos develop a business plan that included financial projections and marketing strategies. Her guidance also supported his efforts to secure a line of credit. Bangor Savings was another resource partner involved in the process. As Carlos moved through the acquisition, Christina helped him organize priorities, explore marketing ideas, and evaluatedecisions.
“The SBDC has been absolutely foundational to this new chapter,” Carlos said. He also valued having a trusted person available as questions arose. “It was amazing to feel like I had a cheerleader on my side from the get-go.”
Since taking ownership, Carlos and General Manager, Erin Leddy, have focused on bringing their own vision to Heirloom while preserving the character and sense of community that longtime customers value. They especially enjoy hearing the stories of what the store has meant to neighborhood residents and helping consignors give quality furniture and home decor a second life.
Carlos sees continued opportunity in resale as customers place greater value on sustainability, quality, and the stories behind meaningful objects. He plans to strengthen Heirloom Consignment’s role in Knightville while continuing to honor the store’s history and community connections.
