When MacKenzie Cayford and Josh Bowker found themselves standing on a 20-acre Christmas tree farm in Lebanon, Maine, it felt like every conversation they had ever shared about their future was suddenly within reach. The property that would become Fallen Oak Farms was not part of their original plan, but it quickly became an obvious next chapter in both their love story and their shared vision for community.
MacKenzie and Josh met just two and a half years ago in the hallway of MacKenzie’s workplace. Despite living in different parts of the state at the time, they discovered overlapping dreams of building something meaningful together. When the opportunity to purchase the farm arose, they knew it was the kind of decision that does not come around twice.
Fallen Oak Farms will operate as a Christmas tree farm, outdoor event venue, and nostalgic farm store. With backgrounds in agriculture, food service, and community events, the couple plans to host concerts, weddings, and celebrations year-round. They will close each year with a holiday season centered around cutting your own tree and creating lasting family traditions. As they put it, “We are OBSESSED with all holidays!” That enthusiasm is at the heart of their goal to create the kind of place they themselves would want to visit.
As first-time business owners preparing to secure a commercial loan, MacKenzie and Josh wanted to make sure they were building on solid ground. They turned to Maine SBDC early in the process to seek a professional who could review their plans. Business Advisor Christina Dodge helped them navigate LLC considerations, licensing requirements, and the proper order of operations. She also worked closely with them to develop a comprehensive business plan and detailed financial projections for Bangor Savings Bank.
“Christina Dodge was a vital part to tying up all of our unanswered questions, insecurities, and loose ends before moving forward with our business loan,” they shared. Beyond the technical guidance, her encouragement stood out. “When we got nervous, she got supportive, and when we got excited, she got excited. That is the kind of stuff that really matters.”
With financing secured and renovations underway, Fallen Oak Farms is preparing to open its storefront this spring and begin welcoming the community back to the property. MacKenzie and Josh are committed to growing at a sustainable pace while building a destination that celebrates every season. For them, this business is more than a farm. It is a shared dream rooted in love, hard work, and a deep belief in creating joyful traditions for others.
