Kevin Browne started Kevin Browne Architecture (KBA) to create a more collaborative design process with clients. Since then, the company has experienced steady growth. To preserve the business’s legacy, they decided to form an employee-owned cooperative.
When KBA began transitioning to an employee-owned cooperative, they contacted the Cooperative Development Institute. They also reached out to Maine SBDC and were connected with Center Director and Business Advisor Peter Harriman. They developed a detailed business plan tailored to KBA’s new cooperative structure as well as financial projections and business ownership roles and responsibilities.
KBA’s transition was a success, empowering employees to become co-owners of the business. This shift brought new collaboration opportunities, positioning KBA as a pioneering architectural cooperative.
Kevin comments, “Maine SBDC played an essential role in helping us navigate the transition to becoming a cooperative. Their guidance made all the difference.”
