As a recognition of the role that technology plays in the future of Maine's small business economy, the Maine SBDC, through partnership arrangements with the Maine Technology Institute
, Maine’s Technology Development Centers and others, offers focused business assistance to Maine's technology community. This expanded technology focus aims to assist entrepreneurs in developing innovative and profitable technology businesses by providing commercialization and in-depth business planning consulting services to technology-based businesses throughout the State of Maine.
Maine Small Business & Technology Development Centers (Maine SBTDC)
are a working collaboration between the Maine Technology Institute (MTI) and the Maine SBDC, designed to provide technology-based businesses the assistance they need as they develop and grow. Maine SBTDC counselors are tech-certified to work intensively with technology-based businesses. “T” counselors provide in-depth coaching, guidance, facilitation, and assistance for technology entrepreneurs seeking to launch or expand their businesses.
As a matter of course, all Maine SBDC counselors can and do assist technology-companies in most areas of business development, and all Maine SBDC and SBTDC business counselors have specific areas of expertise they provide in correlation with one another. Additionally, each of Maine’s Technology Development Centers (TDC) is affiliated with the Maine SBTDC. As technology business incubators, TDCs are designed to help firms meet the challenges of introducing new technology-based
products. TDC incubator managers provide fundamental business counseling and training services to on-site and off-site incubator members in association with the Maine SBDC and SBTDC. The Maine SBDC/SBTDC provides ongoing counselor training and authorization to the TDC incubator managers; access to the Maine SBDC/SBTDC databases to track member/client activity and the interaction of TDC/Maine SBDC/SBTDC staff; access to Maine SBDC/SBTDC operational and training technologies and business counseling tools; and assist, as appropriate, in the coordination of the Technology Development Centers in collaboration with the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development Office of Innovation.

The Maine SBDC/SBTDC assists clients interested in Small Business Innovation Research Assistance Program (SBIR) by informing them of the available resources within the state and linking them with the appropriate agencies that provide direct assistance, notably the Maine Technology Institute (MTI) and the Maine Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). Assistance available within the agencies include access to current government solicitations, literature and printed material on the program, help with proposal preparation, connection with appropriate federal agencies, and one-on-one counseling. The Maine SBDC/SBTDC also provides targeted SBIR assistance through its Statewide SBIR Outreach Office.
